How is it that computers can be so highly functional across countless deterministic tasks yet have difficulty performing functions a child could easily do? If a child is given a a collection of photographs which contain the same dog, they would have no problem pointing out this fact. A camera communicating with an interpreting program, however, is bounded by information represented by the pixels. Algorithms can be written to try to find large scale changes across a screen of pixels, such as a “blob” being inside of the image, but determining if there is a dog is nearly impossible.

RETROFUTURISM: The Tomorrow of Yesterday or The Past Rewritten?
Retro-futurism is a “trend in the creative arts showing the influence of depictions of the future produced prior to about 1960″. Blending old-fashioned “retro” styles with futuristic technology, retro-futurism explores the themes of tension between past and future, and between the alienating and empowering effects of technology. Primarily reflected in artistic creations, retro-futurism has also crawled into the worlds of fashion, architecture, literature, and film.
The word “retrofuturism” was coined by Lloyd Dunn in 1983, according to the Retrofuturism art magazine (1988-1993).

Back in 1994, when Ace of Base’s “The Sign” held the #1 spot of the Billboard Year-End Hot 100 chart, web and graphic designer Sam Jennings came up with the grande design of Deep Interactive’s logo. After working with Deep Interactive, he went on to work for Prince and NPG Records for several years, doing all the creative design work including CDs, DVDs, tour books, merchandise, advertising, murals, photo retouching, and handling all of Prince’s web design. In addition, he ran Prince’s entire online operation. This past year, he worked with the band Pearl Jam expanding their web presence and launching their most recent CD.
